The Course

Health and Social Care gives a practical, real-world approach to learning and develops specific knowledge and skills learners need to work successfully in the care industry. It is ideally suited for those students wishing to follow a career in all aspects of the care industry, including nursing, childcare, social work, midwifery, dentistry and medicine.

Years 10 & 11

The BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Technical qualification in Health and Social Care is worth the equivalent of 1 GCSE. Students will achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* at Level 2 or a Level 1 Pass.

As well as developing an understanding of key content required to work in the care industry.  Students will also develop the skills of: team working; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; presenting information effectively; and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes.

Year 10

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development

(Internally Assessed)

How do people grow and develop throughout their lives? How can factors such as lifestyle choices, relationships and life events affect your growth and development? This unit provides learners with the opportunity to explore how we grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate the factors that affect this growth and development. Learners will then go on to consider how these factors are interrelated.

Assessment: 2 assignments where the students’ complete a portfolio that is internally assessed.

 

Unit 2A: Health and Social Care Services 

(Internally Assessed)

What types of services are available? What can prevent a person from accessing a service? This unit covers the wide range of health and social care services available to users, and also what factors may prevent a person from accessing them. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of the types of services available to meet the needs of different individuals. They will also discover the many reasons which may prevent a person from being able to get the care they need. They will learn the skills to complete an accessibility audit and evaluate the suitability of a service for a user with different needs.

Assessment: 1 assignment where the students’ complete a portfolio that is internally assessed.

Year 11

Unit 2B: Care values in Health and Social Care

(Internally Assessed)

What is good practice in health and social care? What ensures that good practice is applied to support individuals who use health and social care services? In this unit learners will gain an understanding of how these care values are applied in health and social care settings, and their importance to work in the sector. They will also apply these values in practice.

Assessment: 1 assignment where the students’ complete a portfolio that is internally assessed, based on practically demonstrating all care values in context.

 

Unit 3:  Health and Wellbeing assessed by Synoptic External assessment.

What does ‘being healthy’ mean to different people?  What are the different factors that might influence health and wellbeing. What are the key health indicators and how to interpret them? Be able to assess an individual’s health and create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for that person, which includes targets and recommendations of support services available.  Then reflect on the potential challenges the person may face when putting the plan into action.

Assessment: Case study provided by the exam board. Coursework is completed under controlled conditions in a two hour examination and externally marked.

Years 12 & 13

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care is taught across two years of sixth form and is equivalent to one A level.

This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education on social care related courses.

The course consists of four units;

 

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development 

Learners cover physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing.

The unit will be assessed through one examination of 90 marks lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes.

 

Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care 

Learners explore what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations.

The unit will be assessed through one examination of 90 marks lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes.

 

Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

Learners focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individuals’ care and support needs, which are the foundation of all the care disciplines.

The unit will be assessed through a series of written coursework assignments.

 

Unit 14: Physiological Disorders and their Care

Learners explore types of physiological disorders, the procedures for diagnosis, and the development of a treatment plan and provision of support for service users.

The unit will be assessed through a series of written coursework assignments.
